Kapalbhati is also known as Breathe Of Fire . Kapalbhati is coming from the branch of Hatha yoga and Hatha yoga is branch of yoga .The word of Sanskrit Language Hatha Means Force and as a result of hatha yoga (Kapalbhati) constitutes to a system of physical techniques . Kapalbhati is made up of Two words of Sanskrit language in which first word is Kapala that means that "Skull" and second word is Bhati that means that "Shining" . According To Gheranda Samhita ( is a sanskrit text that tells us about yoga in hinduism) Kapalbhati has magical curative effects  that would visible in human being who does kapalbhati yoga everyday . 

If you are a beginner So it is very important to know for you that How many types of Kapalbhati is ? How can do these type of Kapalbhati .

First of all we will discuss about Vatakrama Kapalbhati :-


Vatakrama Kapalbhati is very much similar to the technique of Bhastrika Pranayama but the only exception is that in Vatakrama Pranayama exhalation is active while inhalation is passive which is quiet opposite to normal breathing .

Steps for beginners to do Vatakrama Kapalbhati :-

  • Sit Comfortably with your spine straight .
  • Put your hands on your knees . 
  • Open your hands ( Palms ) towards the sky . 
  • Take a deep breathe in .
  • As you exhale pull your stomach then pull your navel in back towards the spine . 
  • Do as much as you comfortably can . 
  • You may keep your right hand on stomach to feel the abdominal muscles contract . 
  • As you relax the navel and abdomen the . the breathe automatically flows into your lungs . 
  • Take 15-20 such breathes to complete the single round of kapalbharti . 
  • After completing the one round , close your eyes and relax and feel the sensations in your body. 

Precations For Vatakrama Kapalbhati :-

  • People who have artificial pacemaker or stent need to avoid this kapalbhati Pranayam 
  • People who have problem of hernia need to avoid this Kapalbhati Pranayam . 
  • People who have problem of epilepsy , backache due to slippery , recently undergone abdominal surgery need ti avoid this Kapalbhati Pranayam . 
  • Women during shortly after pregnancy as well as during menstruation need to avoid this Kapalbhati Pranayam . 
  • People who have heart problem and hypertension do this yoga in the guidence of yoga experts only . 
  • In case of any medical condition , practice yoga only after consulting your doctor .  

Now we discuss about Vyutkrama Kapalbhati :-

Vyutkrama Kapalbhati involves sniffing of water throgh the nostrils ( two holes of your nose ) and letting the flow down into mouth , spitting it out .

Steps for beginners to do Vyutkrama Kapalbhati :-

  • You can also add a table spoon of salt to one litre of water  ( If you want only ) . 
  • This warm water can help you to clean the mucous lining of nasal cavity and avoids irritation .
  • Collect water in palms of your hand . And take your palms of hand close to the nostrils of your nose .
  • Now you can tilt your head back at an angle , pour the water into the nostrils .
  • Remember that upper point need some practice in the starting . 
  • With Practice water will go from the nostrils into the throat and expelled out through the mouth .
  • Repeat this practice for few times to get a good result .     

Now we discuss about Sheetkrama Kapalhati :-

Sheetkrama Kapalbhati is the reverse of Vyutkrama Kapalbhati but the main difference is , water is taken through the mouth and expilled through the nose . 

Steps for beginners to do Sheetkrama Kapalbhati :-

  • You can also add a table spoon of salt to one liter of water ( if you want only ) .
  • This warm water can help you to clean the mucous cleaning of nasal cavity and avoids irritation . 
  •  Now you have to curl your tongue to create a channel . Create suction and suck in water with the curled tongue making a hissing sound . 
  • Now you have to fill your mouth with water , hold it for few seconds .
  • Bend your tongue forward with the head titled downwards and nostrils pointing towards the floor . 
  • Try to expel the water through the nose that should happen naturally by gravity . 
  • Try to tuck the throat inside towards the back of the neck to to make it easier for the water flow from the mouth to the nasal cavity and out through the nostrils . 
  • You have to expel the water in every few seconds in the beginning bu in installments . 
  • Spit out the remaining water from the mouth . 
  • Once you become the expert you can expel all the water in one go . 
  • Repeat the process for 4-5 times .
  • After completing the process close your eyes , relax and feel the sensations in your body .
